North York General Hospital is one of Canada's community-based academic hospitals. Providing an exceptional care experience for patients and their families, it has been providing diverse community services to the North Toronto area since 1968. The hospital offers a wide range of acute care, outpatient and long-term care services at three sites: the main site, the Branson Outpatient Centre and the Seniors Health Centre.
North York General Hospital (NYGH) is one of Canada's community-based academic hospitals. The hospital partners with 36 different academic institutions including the University of Toronto to stock the professional team with future doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
The North York General Hospital program is the training site for four core residency medical student programs and provides sites for core rotations in 22 different University of Toronto residency programs. More than 300 doctors at the hospital also teach at the University of Toronto, and 1,200 nursing students come here each year to learn and develop their clinical skills. Overseas Births Maternity Hospital
At North York General Hospital, the medical staff is committed to providing outstanding and compassionate care to new mothers and their families, and the hospital's Maternity Centre is one of the larger single-department centres in Ontario, where over 5,800 babies are born each year. Its primary goal is to provide family-centred care where the patient makes the difference.
The Maternity, Newborn Program provides care throughout the pregnancy, from prenatal screening through labour and birth to the postnatal experience. The antenatal assessment service, the volunteer services birth centre, the mother and baby unit and the Tippet Foundation neonatal intensive care unit are all housed on the first floor of the headquarters.
The maternity and neonatal programme team includes: obstetricians, family health practitioners, midwives, registered nurses, experienced registered nurses, social service workers, lactation consultants, team services staff, paediatricians, neonatologists, anaesthetists and respiratory therapists. The team ensures that the complex physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients are met.
Disease Care Cancer Centre
The Cancer Care Program at North York General Hospital offers a complete range of cancer services north of downtown Toronto, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and follow-up care. The Cancer Program at the hospital is one of the larger programs in the Toronto area, providing treatment for many types of cancer, including breast, colon, prostate, gynaecology and urology.
Ensuring a high standard of cancer care for patients, all patients receive care guided by the Ontario Cancer Care Board's Better Practice Standards, which have been proven to provide a better patient prognosis.
Patients and their families have quick access to a range of cancer care services including the BMO Financial Group Breast Diagnostic Centre (part of the Karen, Heather Lynn Steinberg Breast Service); the Anita Tannenbaum Chemotherapy Centre; the Freeman Advanced Hospice; the Gail Graeme White Prostate Centre; the Charlotte -Louis Steinberg Family Breast and Ovarian Cancer Clinic (Genetic Program)
Treatment of Disease Geriatrics Centre
The Geriatric Medical Care Program is one of 10 core clinical programs at North York General Hospital and encompasses a wide range of services with a special focus on geriatric care.
The medical program is equipped with 200 beds, representing 50% of the hospital beds. Services provided to inpatients include: neurology and stroke, cardiology, general internal medicine, respiratory and gastrointestinal, progressive care transition to health facility replacement level, critical care unit, and acute care for the elderly.
The program provides inpatient and outpatient services by an interdisciplinary team. The team includes registered nurses, experienced registered nurses, patient care assistants, clinical nurse educators, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech-language pathologists, clinical dietitians, pharmacists, physicians and clerical support staff.
